25. The Forms of the Returns given in 1871 have, as far as was thought advisable, been adhered to, in order to facilitate comparisons, but those taal in the list of Nationalities is slightly altered, and in the "Age" Returns the
form used in India has been adopted.

26. The chief difference, however, is that the Chinese have been divided according to their tribes, and separate Returns are given of them, instead of being included with other native races. Forms IV. and VI. are, therefore, new Returns.
27. Form X. is a new Return, which it may not be thought necessary to print, as it would be of little value, unless the Town map was at hand to be compared with it; but we consider that it will be of great use when the time comes for taking another Census.

25. Form I. shows that the total population of the Island is 139,208, viz., 105,423 Males and 38,785 Females.
29. The total increase in the 'ten years, since the last Census, is 42,097, or 43.3 per cent.
30. The number of the Europeans and Americans, including the Floating Population, Military and Prisoners, shews an increase of 823, or 42.8 per cent. Taking the Resident Population only, there is an increase of 361, or 39.1 per cent,

While that of the Malays and other Natives of the Archipelago" and of Tamils and other Natives of India" has decreased; that of the European and American" and "Eurasian" remaining almost exactly the same as in 1871.

In partial explanation of the small increase among the Tamils and other Natives of India, it should be pointed out that the Indian troops, who, in 1871, numbered 115, have since then been withdrawn, and that many Convicts also have been allowed to return to their country.
Among the "Other Nationalities" the Arabs for the greatest portion of the increase-their numbers being $36, against 166 in 1871.
